An accident involving a semi truck has the potential to be especially severe. After all, these types of vehicles often carry immensely heavy loads and take special skills and knowledge to operate in a safe manner. Unfortunately, car accidents involving semi trucks frequently occur on Oklahoma’s streets and highways.

A 54-year-old man was killed in a freak traffic accident while changing a tire on the shoulder of the Will Rogers Turnpike. According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, the two right rear wheels of a passing semi truck fell off, one of which hit the man, who was changing a tire on the left-front side of his vehicle in the emergency lane. The man suffered head injuries that were described as severe and ultimately passed away. Police determined that an unsafe wheel was the cause of the accident.

People often think of negligent drivers as the cause of most traffic accidents. However, poorly maintained or malfunctioning vehicles can also cause a car accident that injures or kills another person. A vehicle defect or malfunction could form the basis of a potential lawsuit against the party responsible for manufacturing or maintaining the vehicle. Injured victims may pursue compensation for medical expenses, pain and suffering and lost wages, among others. Should a victim die, compensation sought may also include loss of consortium and funeral expenses.

Accident victims or their loved ones may have many questions regarding liability in a traffic accident caused by an unsafe or poorly maintained vehicle. While no amount of money can fully compensate for the death of a loved one, by exploring all their legal options victims or their families can make sure they take all the steps necessary to obtain the financial resources they need to begin to move on from the accident.
