Oklahoma man arrested for drug-related motorcycle accident

Oklahoma residents know the perils of drunken driving. However, driving under the influence of drugs can be just as deadly when it comes to motorcycle accidents. As a case in Tulsa County shows, the offense not only can lead to charges against a negligent party but also serious injuries to riders.

According to court records, a man was driving a sedan on a late afternoon in rural Sand Springs in March 2013 when he rounded a curve, crossed the median and struck a motorcycle that had two riders. The second rider was so seriously injured that her leg was later amputated. According to an Oklahoma State Trooper who investigated the accident, the driver of the car seemed to be under the influence of drugs and commented that he just wanted to go home and take a nap.

A probable cause affidavit showed that the driver had a previous back injury that led him to take medications for the pain. When his drug prescription ran out, he took a relative's pain medication before going behind the wheel. The driver was arrested on felony charges and then released after posting a $5,500 bond.

Whether a motorcycle accident is caused by a driver under the influence of drugs or by some other negligent driver action, motorcycle riders and passengers are usually the ones who pay the price. As demonstrated by the passenger's fate in this accident, serious injuries often lead to permanent disability. Motorcycle accidents also have a high proportion of fatalities.

Oklahoma motorcycle accident victims have the option of pursuing civil actions against negligent drivers. The guidance of a legal professional can be useful in exploring the merits of a personal injury lawsuit that could potentially award them financial compensation. Any criminal charges against a negligent driver can be cited in a lawsuit.
