Tips to help avoid distracted driving during awareness month

This blog recently discussed texting while driving in Oklahoma. April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, so it may be a good time for drivers to review tips to help them avoid distracted driving. Distracted Driving Awareness Month began in 2014 when an increase in distracted driving was noticed and is intended to bring awareness to the serious and dangerous issue of distracted driving.

The American Trucking Associations is offering tips from professional truck drivers to help avoid car accidents. One truck driver points out that the most significant concern on the roadways currently is distracted driving. He adds that distracted driving is easy to remedy if drivers simply put down their cell phones and other distractions and focus on the roadway.

One simple tip is to store the cell phone away and place its ringer on silent while driving. Those simple steps will help avoid distraction and potential temptation while driving. Texting while driving is always dangerous because it removes the driver's attention from the roadway for seemingly small periods of time during which a lot can happen while traveling.

It is helpful to keep in mind that driving is not a time to multitask; instead, driving is a time to focus on the task at hand. In addition, it is essential for drivers to be well-rested when driving. Properly securing items is also important, keeping in mind that we can all become better educated regarding the dangers of distracted driving.

Distracted driving can be remedied simply by removing distractions and focusing on driving and the roadway. When a distracted driver has failed to take proper steps to ensure the safety of others and carelessly injured a victim, which may be a family member or loved one, there are different legal options available to help protect victims and offer them recourse when harmed by a distracted driver.
