Train accidents by the numbers and help for victims

It is important to understand the full impact of train accidents. Over the past 10 years, with the exception of one year, the number of train accident collisions in the United States has increased. In 2010, there were a total of 2,051 train accidents followed by 2,061 train accidents in 2011; 1,985 train accidents in 2012; 2,102 train accidents in 2013; 2,291 train accidents in 2014; and a slight drop over the previous year at 2,059 train accidents in 2015. The number of train accidents in 2014 and 2015 are based on preliminary statistics.

The number of train accident fatalities has remained fairly consistent with 260 train accident fatalities in 2010; 250 train accident fatalities in 2011; 230 train accident fatalities in 2012; 232 train accident fatalities in 2013; 264 train accident fatalities in 2014; and 244 train accident fatalities in 2015. In addition to fatalities, train accidents also cause a number of different types of harm including serious injuries. Train accident related injuries have increased since 2010 when there were 887 train accident- related injuries. In 2011 there were a total of 1,045 train accident-related injuries, while in 2012 and 2013 there were a total of 974 train accident injuries each year; 861 train accident injuries in 2014; and 967 train accident injuries in 2015.

Train accidents can be costly for victims in a number of ways including physically, financially and emotionally. In addition, family members may be significantly impacted by a train accident. Because of the serious nature of damages suffered in a train accident, victims and their families may be able to recover damages through the personal injury process and wrongful death claims that are part of the legal process designed to protect them following a catastrophic accident such as a train accident.

Train accidents can take a heavy toll on victims and their families. As a result, train accident victims should be familiar with the legal protections available to them if they have been harmed in any way by a train accident.
