As the spring season begins in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, many residents may enjoy the warm weather by riding their motorcycles. Riding a motorcycle is a great way to relax, save money on gas and have a sense of freedom on the road. Unfortunately, motorcycle riding comes with risks, such as motorcycle accidents.
In fact, the Centers for Disease and Control and Prevention stated the more than 4,000 Americans died in motorcycle collisions in 2010. In Oklahoma, 83 motorcyclists died in fatal motor vehicle crashes in 2012. These findings are alarming to residents, particularly to law enforcement officers. As a result, different agencies in Oklahoma launched a safety campaign that will educate motorcycle riders about safe riding.
According to an officer of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, the popularity of motorcycles contributes to the rising number of motorcycle accidents. Police believe that teaching riders techniques and other safety measures could decrease motorcycle crashes in Oklahoma. One officer noted that improper breaking can cause motorcyclists to fall off of their motorcycles. Proper breaking would be one of the lessons that the agencies would emphasize in the campaign.
Professional motorcycle riders will travel throughout the state to raise awareness. Police who ride motorcycles will conduct classes, which will be open to the public.
Educating motorcyclists about safe riding plays a significant role in preventing motorcycle accidents. However, motorcycle crashes may stem from another driver’s impaired driving, inattentive driving or speeding. This means that a responsible motorcyclist is still at risk when it comes to a car-motorcycle accident.
Under such circumstances, a motorcycle accident victim may hold the driver legally responsible for the damages. The compensation, which can be obtained through a personal injury lawsuit, may help with the victim’s financial and emotional losses.
