Rear-end SUV collision in Coweta sends 3 to hospital

Drunken and speeding drivers are not the only dangers Oklahoma drivers should watch out for. People should also look out for motorists who drive too closely behind them. According to government statistics, nearly 29 percent of all accidents in the United States are rear-end collisions, all of which endanger vehicle passengers.

A recent sports utility vehicle accident in Coweta, 110 miles northeast of Oklahoma City, is an example. The accident injured two children and one adult when a Jeep Cherokee was struck by another SUV from behind. According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, the SUV accident occurred in the eastbound lane of the Muskogee Turnpike.

The accident apparently happened, the OHP says, when the Jeep, driven by a 21-year-old Sand Springs woman, was stopped in the left lane and tried to make a turn across the right lane. A Toyota Highlander driven by a 56-year-old Keota man had just changed lanes and rear-ended the Jeep. An eight-month-old infant was seriously injured and transported by Medevac chopper to a local hospital and is listed in critical condition. The baby’s mother and a two-year-old child were also rushed to the hospital. The Highlander driver was not injured. OHP officers confirmed that both children were sitting in the rear seat of the Jeep in child seats. The OHP is continuing to investigate.

Following too closely is a bad habit many drivers have. This dangerous behavior increases the likelihood of a rear-end collision. Drivers should always leave an adequate amount of space between their vehicle and the vehicle ahead of them. In the event of an accident, the driver who rear-ends the vehicle ahead can be found negligent. People who suffer injuries in a rear-end crash can seek compensation through a personal injury lawsuit.
