How serious is the danger posed by train accidents?

Train accidents can unquestionably cause serious injuries and death. Less than thirty minutes south of Oklahoma City, a train accident recently claimed the life of a man following the injuries he sustained in a train accident. Victims of train accidents, and their families, harmed in a train accident due to the negligence of railroad workers may wonder what options are available to help them with the costly process of recovery.

Over the past five years, the number of train accidents has increased. In 2010, there were 2,051 train accidents, followed by 2,061 in 2011 and 1,985 in 2012. While the number of train accidents declined in 2012, preliminary train accident figures for 2013 and 2014 show an increase accounted for by 2,096 train accidents in 2013 and 2,280 train accidents in 2014.

The number of fatalities that have resulted from train accidents over the past five years has consistently remained over 200. Preliminary figures reveal a high of 267 train accident victim fatalities in 2014 which is an increase of seven fatalities from the number of train accident victim fatalities in 2010 which was the previous fatality high for the ten-year period.

The number of injuries that have resulted from train accidents over the past five years has consistently ranged from over 800 victims injured to over 1,000 victims injured in 2011. Victims of train accidents may be left with catastrophic injuries. In addition, family members of victims killed in train accidents may be left facing significant challenges related to the unexpected loss of a loved one. Because of the serious, catastrophic and sometimes fatal nature of train accidents, the legal process provides options for victims to consider to recover compensation for a variety of damages victims may suffer and families may endure following a train accident.
