Railroad crossing safety being addressed at government level

The Oklahoma Department of Transportation recently scheduled and held a special meeting for the purposes of expediting the railroad grade crossing safety program. Commissioners and railway officials were invited to the meeting. An Oklahoma county a few hours east of Oklahoma City that recently suffered a fatal train accident, and where a particular railroad crossing is of particular concern, was the focus of the meeting.

Because of a recent fatality accident, one commissioner noted it may be a good time to review railroad crossings for safety concerns and determine what should be done to improve the safety of crossings. The fatality accident claimed the lives of a mother and her 3 sons. The railroad crossing did not have crossing arms when the woman's car was struck by a train, killing her, her 3 sons and injuring her daughter. Following a review by the Oklahoma Department of Transportation, crossing arms are now being installed at the railroad crossing.

The Oklahoma Department of Transportation diagnostics team is also meeting to review four railroad crossings in a nearby Oklahoma county. The Oklahoma Department of Transportation intends to evaluate railroad crossing conditions, establish the warning level that is recommended, provide a preliminary estimate for the costs of improvements and negotiate funding for proposed improvements to the railroad crossings.

Train accidents associated with unguarded railroad crossings can devastate the lives of victims and result in death, catastrophic injuries and other losses to victims. As a result, it is important for victims to be familiar with the legal options and resources, such as wrongful death claims, available to help them when harmed in a train accident.
