How desk job workers can improve their health

Many people start out having active jobs that require plenty of standing and constant movement. Depending on your circumstances, you might find yourself working a desk job at some point in your life. It can be jarring whenever you transition into a full-time sitting job where you are primarily stagnant the entire workday.

Not everyone adjusts well to this type of change. However, good health is always a possibility in any type of work environment. Sitting jobs have been shown to increase the risk of weight gain, high blood pressure, and other factors linked to cancer and premature death.

Good news

The good news is that your health is always in your hands. You make the choices and decisions that ultimately impact the health and vitality of your life. If you do not want a desk job, you can change that or modify your work environment. You choose your habits. This includes what you eat, if you exercise daily, how much sleep you get, etc.

Improving your desk job health

There are ways to improve your health while working at a desk or sitting most of the time. Here are some simple changes to make to create a healthier work environment for yourself:

  • Drink lots of water - Consuming plenty of water will force you to get up and use the bathroom frequently, which will break up the monotony of sitting for long periods of time.
  • Request a standing desk - If possible, ask your employer for permission to use a standing desk to reduce the amount of sitting.
  • Prioritize walking - Invite your co-workers to take frequent walks together to increase your circulation and overall oxygen throughout your body.

When it comes to your health, it is truly everything that supports your quality of life. You cannot operate at your highest as an employee, parent, friend, or person without being in good mental and physical health. Investing in good healthy habits at work will prevent serious injury and prolong your overall health-span.
