Dangerous roads in Oklahoma

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association, there were over 70,000 car accidents in Oklahoma in 2016. Could the amount of accidents be due to dangerous roads that lie within the state? What are the most dangerous roads in Oklahoma and why?

Interstate 40

Interstate 40 cuts straight through Oklahoma from east to west and travels through many states in the US, causing it to be a road that sees a lot of traffic. With more traffic comes traffic jams, and a melting pot of inexperienced drivers, drowsy drivers and intoxicated drivers.

Turner turnpike

Turner turnpike connects two of Oklahoma’s largest cities: Oklahoma City and Tulsa. This road also has a high-speed limit, at 75 miles per hour. Crashes that occur at high speeds lead to catastrophic accidents that create a lot of damage to the driver and the vehicle.

State highway 9

Highway 9 in Oklahoma is a major highway stretching from Texas to Arkansas. A recent study shows that Oklahoma’s state highway 9 is the second most dangerous highway in the United States. Blind curves promote head on collisions, and drivers who disregard no passing zones may be to blame for the dangerous nature of the highway.

Out of the three dangerous roads listed, many dangerous driving situations caused fatal crashes. The dangerous situations on each road include heavy traffic, blind curves and high speeds. When traveling down these roads, and any road in Oklahoma, make sure to watch out for the conditions listed above.
