Certain states have higher risks of pedestrian fatalities

Imagine being in a state where your likelihood of being in a crash is higher than in others. For example, as a pedestrian in Florida, you have the highest risk of being involved in a pedestrian accident than anyone in any other state.

In fact, eight of the 10 most dangerous areas in the United States for pedestrians are located in Florida. Others are spread out across the deep south. Just four are located in more northern states.

Oklahoma made the list, too. Oklahoma’s authorities planned for more pedestrian crashes and fatalities in 2018 compared to 2017 instead of expecting a decline in deaths. That’s telling because it means that even the authorities are aware that something is wrong.

What causes so many pedestrian fatalities?

Poor infrastructures can be part of the issue. Not having sidewalks, bike paths and other pedestrian-safe areas can lead to collisions. However, there’s also a higher risk of injuries and fatalities for those who have higher walk-commute ratios. This tends to mean minority communities since wealthier areas tend to have better infrastructures and vehicles to get from place to place.

As a pedestrian, one of the best things you can do for yourself is to be aware of the ways you can protect yourself. You always have to be defensive, making sure to look for traffic before walking into a roadway, even if you have the “WALK” signal. If you are hit, you’re the one who is the most at risk since drivers are protected by their vehicles. You’ll be entitled to fair compensation, but you still want to do all you can to avoid a crash.
