Pedestrians: Know the risks of a car crash

On Behalf of | May 2, 2019 | Bicycle & Pedestrian Auto Accidents, Motorcycle |

Pedestrians are at a serious disadvantage when it comes to collisions. If a vehicle hits them, they have no real protection against the impact. Their bodies take the entire force of the blow, which can result in fatal injuries.

The injuries in a pedestrian accident are directly related to the speed at which the driver is traveling at the time of impact. Drivers who are traveling 10 or 15 mph may be going slow enough that the pedestrian is able to walk away with only cuts, scrapes and bruises. On the other hand, getting hit at 60 or 70 mph almost guarantees a death.

As a pedestrian, there are some tips that can help you stay safe. Here are three to remember.

1. Even if you have the right-of-way, let drivers pass

If a driver doesn’t seem to see you and is attempting to drive through an intersection or crosswalk, wait for them to pass. While you might have the right-of-way, it’s safer to allow them to continue than to try to prove that you’re correct. Jumping out into the lane is a great way to get hit, which you should try to avoid.

2. Make eye contact

Another good tip is to keep eye contact with the driver if possible. Eye contact guarantees that they see you and can motion to you to cross.

3. Travel in groups

Finally, if you have the option, always travel in groups. Groups are easier to see and less likely to get hit.

It’s possible to prevent some crashes, but if you’re hit, you still have the right to pursue a claim against those responsible.
