Auto accidents are among the leading cause of death in the United States, according to a report from the U.S. Department of Transportation. The reality is that there are millions of people who drive every day, and with so many people on the roads, there’s a significant chance that you’ll be involved in a car crash at one time or another in your life.

While many car crashes are minor, there are others that can cause severe injuries or even death. Motor vehicle accidents were among the leading 10 causes of death in 2015 and the six years prior, showing just how serious they can really be.

Are males or females more likely to be killed in auto crashes?

Interestingly, men are more likely to be involved in fatal crashes. For males, traffic accidents were the leading cause of death at the ages 10, 11 and 17 to 23. For females, they were the leading cause of death at age 9 and between ages 16 and 23. Motor vehicle crashes ranked the 12th most common cause of death for males and the 16th for females in 2015.

What can you do to reduce the likelihood of a fatal crash?

It is possible to reduce the chances of a fatal crash. A few things you can do include:

  • Planning a route with fewer vehicles and less construction
  • Keeping up on vehicle maintenance
  • Traveling with fewer people in your vehicle
  • Wearing a seat belt
