Rear-end collisions are collisions that occur when a driver traveling behind another does not stop and hits the tail end of the front vehicle. Many rear-end collisions are minor, occurring at slow speeds, but some result in significant damage to vehicles and injuries to people.
There are two primary reasons that rear-end collisions can happen. These include:
- Following too closely
- Brake-checking
Following too closely is one act that you can remedy easily by slowing down and backing away from the vehicle that is traveling in front of you. Reducing your speed and putting a greater distance between yourself and the other vehicle makes it less likely that you’ll be involved in a crash. If you do end up in a crash, the slower speed that you’re traveling at makes it less likely that you’ll suffer serious injuries.
Brake-checking is another reason for crashing. This happens when the person who is driving in front slams on their brakes. They might do this because of disliking how close you are to them or to attempt to cause a crash that they can use to seek compensation.
Brake-checking is illegal, but people may still attempt it. If a driver has thrown on their brakes and nearly caused a crash with you, do your best to put some distance between yourself and their vehicle. If you can, get the person’s license plate number and call the police to report the incident.
