Helmets can prevent debilitating injuries in motorcycle accidents

Some Oklahomans, who are bored with operating four-wheeled vehicles, have turned to the two-wheeled form of daily transportation -- a motorcycle. Riding a motorcycle offers convenience, such as saving on gas costs, but doing so also comes with great risks. Collisions involving motorcycles often yield to catastrophic injuries and even fatalities, in some severe cases. Riders should who wear helmets provide themselves added protection in the event of a crash. Oklahoma riders who are still unaware of what helmets can do should learn how they can try to prevent serious injuries.

Helmets that have met the manufacturing standards set by the U.S. Department of Transportation can significantly reduce serious injuries and can reduce the likelihood of fatalities in motorcycle accidents. According to data released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 1,500 motorcyclists were spared from serious injuries and deaths because of helmets. Because helmets protect the head, they can prevent serious head injuries, such as traumatic brain injury. There is no cure for TBI and once a rider has sustained such an injury, the person may need lifetime of rehabilitation or medication, which is costly.

Riders need to understand that wearing helmets can save lives. Aside from wearing protective gear, riders should also ride responsibly to prevent collisions. In the event of a collision, the responsible party may be held liable for the victim's damages. Riders who have sustained serious injuries after a collision should note that they may be entitled to damages if the accident was caused by someone else's negligence.

In Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, local residents who have sustained injuries in motorcycle accidents may wish to speak with a legal counsel to learn if they are entitled to compensation. A legal review of the details of the accident can determine the appropriate damages needed by the victims and their families.
